Insomnia. Homer. (translation of Osip Mandelstam, from the Russian)

/ /

Insomnia. Homer. Full sails sheeted tight.
I’ve read the catalogue of ships half way,
This outspread fleet of cranes, this broad array
That once, over the Aegean, rose in flight.

A wedge of cranes on wing toward shores unseen,
You kings, whose brows the gods have crowned with foam,
Where are you sailing? What would Ilium
Be without Helen, Greeks? What would it mean?

Homer, the sea — love sets all things in motion.
To whom should I give ear? Homer is quiet,
While thundering on and on in eloquent riot
Beneath my pillow, bellows the dark ocean.
