Poem

The Well

/ /

After St. Bernard’s Well

One day, you’ll be warm as ooze at the bottom
of the well. Your longing, a tin bucket swinging
by rope over its stomach. Your life in the world,
the algae reflecting what happens to all matter

you
are matter, you
mattered, you
were the well.
