We had a lively and convivial celebration of the poetry of Eugenio Montale on the evening of April 22 in Chicago. David Michael Hertz discussed the stages in the composition of his book, Eugenio Montale, The Fascist Storm, and the Jewish Sunflower. After his presentation, Rosanna Warren, David Hertz, and Rebecca West read English translations of a selection of Montale’s poems for his American lover, the Dante scholar Irma Brandeis, and Silvia Guslandi followed with beautiful renditions of the poems in Italian. The evening concluded with discussion and hearty consumption of Middle Eastern delicacies.
